Ruvu Fuelwood Pilot Project

The Ruvu Fuelwood is a project managed through the Joint Forest Approach, located within the Ruvu North Forest Reserve.  It occupies about 1900 hectares which is about 6 percent of the Ruvu North Reserve Area.  The reserve being faced with lack of harvesting plan, uncontrolled exploitation  and lack of plan for natural generation, has been gradually loosing a good deal of valuable timber species.

The project aims at creating sustainability of managing the natural forest resources in the Ruvu Forest Reserve. The reserve, being located near to the city of Dar es Salaam is subjected to the exponentially growing demand for wood fuel such that the pilot project is a potential strategic opportunity to protect the forest from excessive exploitation.  The participatory approach of involving the local community in the management process of the natural forest resources was considered important in solving this constraint.
