TaTEDO - CENTRE FOR SUSTAINABLE MODERN ENERGY EXPERTISE
TaTEDO is a sustainable modern energy development NGO based in Dar es salaam, Tanzania with activities in ten (10) regions, 27 districts and 127 villages in Tanzania. The organization has more than nineteen years experience actively involved in sustainable energy development projects and programmes in rural areas. It is also hosting and affiliated to several local and international sustainable energy development partners and networks. In this regard, TaTEDO is able to draw and share experiences and knowledge from such networks and partners at local, national and international levels.

Vision
Poverty free and self-reliant communities in Tanzania accessing sustainable modern energy services
Mission
To advance popular access to sustainable modern energy technologies in marginalized communities in Tanzania through technological adaptations, community mobilization, capacity building and advocacy for increased access to sustainable energy services, poverty reduction, environmental conservation and self-reliance.
Goals are to:
- Improve quality of life of Tanzanians by contributing to availability of improved and sustainable energy services, employment and income generating opportunities, which are essential for poverty reduction,
- Reduce environmental degradation resulting from increased use of wood and fossil fuels,
- Assist the country to reduce dependence on imported energy.
Activities of TaTEDO
To achieve its goals, TaTEDO undertakes the following activities:
- Promote the use of modern energy for productive uses (industrial, agriculture and basic infrastructure etc), consumptive uses(households and communities) and institutional uses (education, health, water etc).
- Implement sustainable energy programmes and projects.
- Provide energy related consultancy services.
- Develop networking and partnership with local and international organizations,
- Manage and disseminate energy information to stakeholders.
- Conduct lobbying and advocacy to influence energy related policies, legislations and strategies
- Support sustainable energy enterprises.
- Conduct energy related applied researches.
Recognition of Activities and Awards
- On the basis of her excelling performance, TaTEDO has, on different occasions, been recognized and awarded the following awards: -
- Second prize in Engineering and Service Provision Category, Dar es Salaam International Trade fair (DITF), Dar es salaam in July 2009.
- Third prize in Engineering and Service Provision Category, Dar es salaam International Trade fair (DITF), Dar es salaam in July 2008,
- Third prize in Engineering and Service Provision Category, Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), Dar es Salaam in July 2007,
- The first prize in Engineering and Service Provision Category, Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), Dar es Salaam in July 2004,
- Third prize in engineering products category at the International Trade Fair held in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania (July 2000),
- Certificate of best practices by UNDP in recognition of the valuable contribution to the promotion of indigenous technologies in combating desertification and mitigating the effects of drought in 1999,
- Second prize in Research, Training and Consultancy category at the international Trade fair held in Dar es Salaam Tanzania in (July 1998),
- Certificate of recognition among hundred global best practices during the UN Habitant II on a conference held in Istanbul in Turkey, 1996.
- At the Dar es salaam International Trade Fair held in Dar es Salaam Tanzania in (July 2004), TaTEDO was awarded a first prize in Engineering products and services provision category;
- In June 2003, TaTEDO was awarded a national second prize in Environmental Conservation in the Coast Region, from the vice-president office. The award was organized by the Tanzania Coastal Management Partnership (National Environment Management Council, GreenCOM, Coastal Resources Centre and USAID),
- In January 2001, TaTEDO in partnership with COSTECH and NSWTI was selected as the Regional Centre for Sustainable Rural Energy Development under the SADC-ELMS land degradation and desertification control programme.
- At the Dar es salaam International Trade Fair held in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania (July, 2000), TaTEDO was awarded third prize in Engineering products category; and
- At the Dar es salaam International Trade Fair held in Dar es Salaam Tanzania in (July 1998), TaTEDO was awarded second prize in Research, Training and Consultancy category;
- In 1999 TaTEDO was awarded by UNDP a certificate of best practices award in recognition of the valuable contribution to the promotion of indigenous technologies in combating desertification and mitigating the effects of drought;
- Renewable energy and Wood fuel Technologies and practices being promoted by TaTEDO were recognized as among the hundred global best practices during the UN Habitant II Conference held in Istanbul, Turkey from May 30th to June 14th, 1996. Upon request from UNHC, the best practice information was updated in March 1998;
TaTEDO Capacity and Experiences
- In order to facilitate effective implementation of her development programmes, TaTEDO has a policy of continuously improving her capacity, through training, recruitment of competent staff and acquiring modern office equipment and facilities. Also develop partnership and empower associates at the local level. Present organization strength and capacity include:
- Fifty four (54) staff of whom, 31 core technical staff and 23 supporting staff.
- Modern office with adequate communication facilities (computers with internet, e-mail, fax machine, telephones) and conference room with modern facilities (audiovisual, LCD data projector),
- Bi-annual English and Swahili newsletters (Sustainable Energy and Development Forum and Jielimishe - Swahili bulletin), and Monthly Energy Information Newsletter ( TEI)
- Partners and networks of CBOs, NGOs, Government (such as DiSEDCs) and private institutions from within and outside the country,
- Hosting a number of national networks such as National Gender and Sustainable Networks (NGSEN) and East African Energy Technology Development Network (EATDN),
- A library with a good collection of over 6000 documents on sustainable energy, environment , climate change and gender issues,
- Committed board of directors and members.
- Two zone offices (Northern and Lake Zone) with field staff.
- Facilitate formation of DiSEDCs in action areas.
- Empower sustainable energy groups (SEGs) and facilitate establishment of Community Centers for sustainable energy and enterprises services (COSEESE).
The overall management structure of TaTEDO is made up of the Annual General Meeting, the Board and the Executive Director and various committees. The board is responsible for policy formulation and developing strategies including overall coordination of the management. The Board office bearers are elected after every three years by the Annual General Meeting of members who also have to approve TaTEDO’s planned development programmes and budgets.
The Executive Director is the chief executive of the organization and in-charge of the day-to-day management including enforcement of regulations and implementation of the organization’s development activities. TaTEDO has reviewed its staff regulations, scheme of service and financial regulations in 2009. The Executive Director is assisted by the Management Coordinating Committee (MCC), which is made up of seven managers who are heads of various technical and administrative departments.
Professional Qualifications
Executive Director Office
Executive Director who has been in the office since 1997. He has over 20 years experience in Renewable/Rural Energy combining extensive experience working with Government, University (IRA), consultancy firms and renewable energy non-governmental organization. He also has wide experience in rural/ renewable energy studies, projects development, planning, field implementation, enterprise and institutional development, energy policy analysis, management systems development, rural energy demand assessments, community mobilization and participatory planning and implementation methods. He has been involved in the formulation of the 1992 Tanzania energy policy and the review of 2003 national energy policy.
