TaTEDO Conducted Monitoring and Evaluation for its Voluntary Carbon Market Project. Neatness Bwenge, TaTEDO
Hivos and TaTEDO through the “Hivos Climate Fund” agreed to pursue construction of efficient woodstoves in Rombo and Hai districts, Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania. According to the agreement signed , TaTEDO is required to facilitate the construction of 6,000 efficient woodstoves using Hivos Climate Fund.
Twenty nine (29) efficient woodstoves were randomly selected for verification, carried out by physically inspecting each stove and collecting various information including: identity of stove owner, family size, stove identification number, status of a stove, saving in fuel wood, and improvement of indoor air pollution. All 29 verified efficient stoves exist and are in use. Families with efficient woodstoves have abandoned three stone cooking place. The efficient woodstoves are used mainly for cooking food, boiling water for drinking, shower, etc. In few cases, according to few individuals, warm water is fed to lactating cows to improve milk production. Generally, all households, stoves are used for cooking food three times a day. Among the 29 households, only one household is using the efficient woodstoves for other activities for preparing cookies as a small business and boiling (pasteurizing) milk. Efficient woodstoves have substantially reduced the amount of fuel wood used by 70 percent, among 29 households, 14 indicated direct cash saving arising from efficient woodstove use ranging from Tshs. 3,500 ($2.5) to Tshs. 30,000 ($22) per month This is a substantial saving considering the level of income in rural areas of Tanzania. Indirect saving was realized though increase in productive time by reducing time used to collect fuel wood from the farm and forests, and cooking supervision. Furthermore, households who used to be self sufficient in fuel wood before acquiring efficient woodstove are now selling excess fuel wood after obtaining the stoves. Therefore, the project has provided relief to communities in terms of cash saving, reduction of indoor air pollution and reduction of time used to collect firewood. |

A total of about 1,000 household efficient woodstoves has already been constructed by June 2010. Hivos engaged a consultant to verify that the reported household efficient woodstoves facilitated by TaTEDO are in existence and in use by the families for household cooking purposes. It is expected that, if these stoves will be used , will reduce emission which will be marketed by Hivos Climate Fund through the voluntary carbon market.
